VIN - Vehicle Identification Number
VIN is short form for Vehicle Identification Number. All Volvo cars come with one unique 17 digit ID which identify the car from the rest. The VIN has several info on the car at factory setting. This info is valuable to identify the car, or if the previous owner has made any major changes like changing the engine or gearbox type.
For first generation S40/V40, these are the details which can be derived from the VIN. Please note that the other class of Volvo (like 200/700/900 series or 850 series) come with separate details. The details might be similar but not always the same.
For example, S40 VIN = YV1 V S 29 6 9 1 5 666666
